Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Dr Barrett is qualified in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a specialised technique for treating certain skin cancers with the highest cure rates and maximal preservation of healthy tissue. This advanced surgical technique is particularly valuable for skin cancers in cosmetically sensitive areas or those with aggressive growth patterns.

Pre-Mohs surgery consultations are held at Frontier. Mohs surgical procedures are performed at Ramsay Surgical Centre Charlestown.

Dr Barrett is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and qualified in Mohs Micrographic Surgery. He offers dermatology consultations at Frontier Dermatology and performs Mohs surgical procedures at Ramsay Surgical Centre Charlestown.

Training and Experience

Dr Barrett completed his medical training at the University of Newcastle following undergraduate studies in economics, and continued his prevocational training within Hunter New England Health.
Throughout his dermatology training, Dr Barrett worked at the Skin and Cancer Foundation, Westmead Children's Hospital, and the Royal Newcastle Centre. He has completed rural rotations throughout NSW including Lismore, Port Macquarie, Walgett, Dubbo, Orange, and with the Aboriginal Medical Service.

Research and Education

Dr Barrett is actively engaged in research, having had multiple papers published in domestic and international dermatology journals. He continues to be involved in the education of junior doctors and dermatology trainees through his work at John Hunter Hospital, where he works as a Visiting Medical Officer.

Dr Barrett manages all conditions involving the skin, hair, and nails, with special interests in:
  • Mohs surgery
  • Skin cancer management
  • Autoimmune bullous disease
  • Cutaneous lymphomas
He also treats eczema, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, hyperhidrosis, acne, and paediatric dermatological conditions.

Procedures and Treatments

Dr Barrett performs Mohs Micrographic Surgery, diagnostic skin biopsies, surgical excision of skin cancers, cryotherapy, phototherapy (narrowband UVB), photodynamic therapy, intralesional steroid injections, and botulinum toxin treatments for hyperhidrosis.
