About the service

What is OptimaScan?

OptimaScan is a whole-body photography system integrated with advanced imaging technology. The scanning process is non-contact, free of radiation and capable of monitoring hundreds of moles, spots and lesions.

DermEngine software uses powerful AI-driven data analysis to compare subsequent scans to your baseline images, identifying new and changing lesions.

Frontier dermatologists review the data, and provide a comprehensive report and recommendatioins for management.

OptimaScan is manufactured by MetaOptima Technology (Canada). DermEngine is used by dermatology practices in over 30 countries.

Who is OptimaScan for?

The imaging service is available to any patient who wants a documented baseline of their skin. OptimaScan is recommended for patients with a personal or family history of melanoma, multiple moles or at higher risk of skin cancer.

Higher-risk patients

  • A personal or family history of melanoma or other skin cancer
  • Previous melanoma requiring ongoing surveillance
  • A large number of moles, or atypical moles flagged by your GP or dermatologist
  • Fair skin with a history of significant sun exposure or sunburn
  • Immunosuppression or other clinical reasons for closer monitoring

Booking

Contact Frontier Dermatology to schedule an OptimaScan appointment to be held at our satelite imaging suite: 13 Canberra St, Charlestown.

GP referral not required.

On the day

Wear loose clothing
Remove jewellery and makeup
Tie back long hair
Avoid fake tan and heavy moisturiser
Set aside ~20-30 mins for the appointment process

Imaging

You stand on a platform and hold support handles. The lighting and camera arm rotates around you to capture a full 360-degree image set in under 1 minute. Within 7-10 minutes, our DermEngine software generates the images for review. Following this, additional dermatoscopic images may be taken of specific lesions.

Dermatologist Review

Your images will be reviewed by a   dermatologist at Frontier Dermatology. You will receive a comprehensive report and any recommended next steps.

Medicare

OptimaScan imaging is a private service and is not covered by Medicare.

If your scan identifies an area requiring further clinical assessment, subsequent dermatology consultations or procedures may attract Medicare rebates with a valid GP referral.

Private health insurance

OptimaScan is generally not covered by private health insurance.

Please check with your insurer for details about your cover and inclusions.

Common questions

Do I need a referral for an OptimaScan?
No. OptimaScan is a private imaging service and does not require a GP or specialist referral.

During our launch phase, this service is currently availble to patients of Frontier Dermatology.
You can register your interest via the enquiry form.
How long does the process take?
The scan itself takes approximately 60 seconds. Allow around 20-30 minutes for your appointment, which includes the scan, collation of images, followed by manual dermatoscopic images if required.
Is the scan uncomfortable?
The scanning process is non-contact and free of radiation. You will stand on a platform and hold support handles while the camera arm rotates around you. The lighting bright but not uncomfortable.

You will be need to undress down to your underwear. Disposable G-string underwear will be provided for you to change into, or you are welcome to provide your own. Women are required to remove their bra.  
Who reviews my images?
Dermatologists at Frontier. You will recieve a report outlining the findings and any recommended next steps. If a dermatology consultation or scheduled procedure is required, our team will coordinate a time with you (standard consultation fees apply).
Appointment availability is subject to urgency and may vary by dermatologist.

How often should I have a scan?
Your dermatologist will recommend a surveillance schedule based on your individual risk factors. Many patients have scans every 12 months. Patients with higher risk may be recommended more frequent imaging.
When will I get my results?
You will receive your report with the findings and any recommended next steps within 7 - 10 business days. If a dermatology consultation or planned procedure is required, our team will contact you to arrange an appointment (standard consultation fees apply).

How is my data stored and protected?
Your images are stored on the DermEngine clinical platform under medical-grade data protection. Access is limited to your treating dermatologist and authorised clinical staff at Frontier Dermatology. Data handling complies with the Australian Privacy Act 1988.

OptimaScan total body photography is a monitoring tool used to assist specialist dermatologists in tracking changes to the skin over time. It is not a diagnostic test in its own right and does not replace clinical examination. All imaging is reviewed by a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD). Outcomes vary between patients, and your dermatologist will advise on the most appropriate monitoring schedule for you.
